Wouldn't it be nice...

Wouldn't it be nice if I could make something like this :) I would need a rather long sheet of paper...

Graduation!

It has finally came and is now over. What was a long day in heels for many hours, oversized robes, a hat that ruined my hair, discovering how large my head is and also closing a great chapter in my life.

Over the past three years I have made many good friends, seen many new things and been inspired by the lot! The journey is not over and I feel almost certain that it is just beginning.

What is next? I am still a little unsure of, but am comfortable in knowing that I can admit it and look forward to finding a bit more about myself when taking my creative path.

Hopefully I can make many posts from my discoveries, observing and experiencing a whole lot more NEW things :)

Doodles

It was my birthday last weekend, I had some lovely handmade books given too me as presents so I thought I'd get scribbling late last night... while munching away on my birthday chocolates! This was something I was collaging together from all the shapes and objects at my party. My mom and dad needed a big thank you for all the organising! :)  I need to get going with some colour.

Linear work, more sources of inspiration

I really want to develop my linear work with more contemporary themes. Hopefully I can find my 'style' and feel comfortable with it...

Research

I love the use of tone in these images. The typeface created is fresh and innovative, very much reflective of the brand.

A visual identity project for a music agency in Columbia, I found these while looking through a magazine and taking further research into visual communications VBG (Visual Brain Gravity) http://www.vbg.si/en/

Stack Magazines

A couple of months ago I subscribed to a lovely service. A service that brings together some of the world's best independent magazines. Interesting mainly from a design perspective, I particularly enjoyed this month's surprise package! The ldN (International Designers Network) prides itself on doing all the things that are normally considered too expensive or too difficult to do with ink on paper, a policy that has helped it grow into one of the world’s most highly regarded design magazines. A jumble of visuals was what I loved the most, it was up to you where to start reading and you controlled how to read it! Lovely paper and print showcasing interesting examples of graphic design and illustration. An interest introduced to me was the typographic work from Tom Davie, graphic designer http://studiotwentysix2.com

I never work much with the use of typography and every time I look through sources of inspiration they always make me wish that I did!

Postcards have arrived!

The degree show is a day away and our promotional postcards have arrived! I am quite pleased with them, I think they represent my strengths with linear work and composition. Can't wait to send some of these out to potential employers...

Experimenting with my promotional mailer

These were done as part of a self branding project at university. I wanted to work with something that could be easy to reproduce, and that kept within the style of some of my hand made working methods. I still think this needs some work as I am unsure if it speaks for my graphic design work and is it 'professional' enough to present to potential employers working in this discipline?

However, from these examples I went onto create a longer format so that I could fit the spreads from magazine projects within a single panel. Envelopes are my next step, something simple and again using the 'hand-made' themes.

Miscellaneous

Another personal project, work leading on from an interview for a potential job in the creative market! The cupcake drawings below were from the first stages of my application...

My task was to work with light colour palettes and create some new patterns and characters for a princess party range... I had fun with them, however was unsuccessful. I am not sure if these finished pieces reflected my style very well but I created them quickly, and quickly for me meant on the computer creating a 'digital' look. You can see from the two related posts my ideas are very different in approach and media. Nevertheless all for experience and I can learn from what I did and saw at the lovely studios.

Postcard Designs

As part of another university module I had to look at new postcard designs, also creating my creative CV, letterhead and promotional mailer. Preparing myself for the scary and exciting world of work! Here are the two postcard images I worked with, drawing a similar style from the linear buildings within an earlier project, only this time 'sticking' together buildings I see on my travels throughout the day. I am not completely happy with them, I prefer the use of textural background for the first, and the compact shape it creates but I still don't think they are ready to print yet.

Family Portraits

From a previous post of inspiration these are the final prints I worked with for the brief. In the end I still preferred the repetitive pattern and contemporary colour tone of my first idea. I considered the idea of placing my drawn spectacles into domestic environments (see bottom image) however this was not my own photograph and therefore only contributed as an idea.

A long day... but finally they are finished!

As promised, here are the final murals Ewa and I have painted at Warstones Primary School, Wolverhampton. I think they have turned out well, the colours have certainly given some life to the corridors.

Sketchbook work

A personal project has meant I've had the chance to have some fun with my drawings and use of collage pattern (my scanner has not reproduced the best quality!)
It was also an excuse to use the lovely sketchbook my friend had bought me for my last birthday...

Mural Project

I volunteered to work on a project for a school in Wolverhampton. They wanted to brighten up the corridors with paintings that reflect 'aspects of school life'. The corridors were very boring so it wasn't going to take much to add some colour! It has been a challenge and is taking longer than expected but I think the school will be pleased with the results.

Day1

Day 2 Still to be completed with a background and linear detail.

Self Promotional Postcards

So, as my degree show draws closer we are working on getting our promotional postcards printed. I didn't have much time to come up with a new image so incorporated work I have made in my final year. I am quite pleased with them, but with discussions in tutorials the building postcard presented my strengths of composition and linear work better than the mushrooms. Even though I quite like the 'pretty' mushrooms.
I will be working on a new postcard image for my creative industries module so watch this space!
